Perform hallux valgus surgery in summer or winter?

Basically, foot operations such as bunion surgery are performed all year round. This means that you can have an operation in spring, summer, autumn, or winter. The important thing is to question yourself about what type you are. What can you handle better: With the heat in summer or a possible slippery snow in winter?

What advantages can the seasons bring for hallux valgus surgery?

The table gives ideas about what my patients looked for when planning hallux valgus surgery. Use it as a guide. You can find out for yourself whether you should plan your hallux valgus surgery for summer or winter, spring, or autumn.

Spring

  • When the dark season is over and nature blossoms, many people are in a better mood. This is always beneficial for a hallux valgus surgery.

  • For passionate skiers, the best time of year is after the ski season. Spring is a good time to get back in shape for the start of the next ski season.

Summer

  • For many, summer is best; they are more carefree and upbeat because of the sun and lighter clothing. This is good for the mind and therefore also a good time for hallux valgus surgery.
  • Early bloomer allergy sufferers prefer summer because they are often fit again then.
  • Depending on your job, the summer is easier to be away from work for a few weeks.
  • This is the best time of year for winter sports enthusiasts who still enjoy winter sports until spring.
  • Lightly clothed, a possible surgery-related disability can be better managed with orthoses or walking aids.
The light of summer brightens the mood, which sometimes helps better over any dry spells.

Autumn

  • Temperatures are often still pleasant, and without snow and ice, so it can be an ideal time.
  • For people who like to go swimming, the ideal season is when summer is over.

Winter

    • Better for some people, as they do less sport and are outside less in winter.
    • Resting or giving rest is easier for certain people in winter.
    • Depending on your job, winter is easier to take time off to heal.

Conclusion: When is the best time of year for surgery?

What one patient perceives as an advantage may be a disadvantage for another. Therefore, you should not stick to a blanket approach to possible procedures, but rather orient yourself to your personal wishes and needs as well as professional obligations. For example, if you work in a home office, it may suit you well at any time of the year or especially well when a particular quarter is over.

Dr. Tonio Gottlieb, MD, recommends:

"Please plan sufficient time for the healing process after the hallux valgus surgery allows for. Depending on the type of deformity of the crooked big toe and the appropriate surgical procedure, the healing time and aftercare is about 6 weeks. This is related to the extent of the hallux valgus surgery, the personal perception of pain, regular aftercare and the individual healing characteristics, which are different for each person."
